Our winter’s are apparently getting warmer; but that doesn’t mean we won’t experience those bitter -20 days and nights. In fact, because our temperatures are rising it makes those bitter cold days and nights feel even more bone chilling.
Relief can be found under a cozy blanket, turning the thermostat to a desired temperature, or lighting the fireplace (if you have one). Sitting by the fireplace is quite possibly the most desired form of warmth on a cold winter evening. If you have one then you understand the joy they bring, but if you’re in the market to have one installed, there’s many design options to choose from. We’re big fans of what the fireplace brings to our home (not just the heat it provides), but before we had it installed we researched a ton of design elements. Here’s a few we found to be high on the list of needs:
If an aesthetic look is what you’re after, marble is a front runner thanks to its sleek design and abundance of options in colour, patterns, and textures. No matter your aesthetic or budget, there’s a marble out there for you. The classic subway or hexagon tile are commonly used in part because of the colour options, but also thanks to their ability to remain in high demand.
Looking for a nature-inspired theme? Look no further than stone. There’s no denying the fact that a stone fireplace can stop you in your tracks and leave you in awe of it’s unique presentation. Part of the beauty with stone is the many ways it can be set; using a swirl design with pebbles, or stacking a variety of shapes, you can create a masterpiece that’s architecturally stunning in its contemporary rawness, or soft and cozy with it’s apres ski feel. Bottom line… you can do no wrong with stone. When selecting your stone mason, ask to see of their work and be clear on your design view and then let them be creative.
When your adjoining space is already designed, create a fireplace that fits. If you live in a home that has a set layout or style, a fireplace that blends in rather than stands out can be highly appealing. Completing the existing decor in the home using balanced choices for colours and materials will help with an integrated look, but will still draw your attention to the centre of the room.
Vintage is back and even better than before. If your home calls for a vintage looking fireplace you can easily elevate it to modern levels. By combining metals, paint, or decor with your fireplace, you can remain true to the vintage architecture while raising the eye appeal. Vintage doesn’t mean “old” and “boring”; there’s too much character and ambience with them that can carry and entire room.
